About

What made you decide to attend the University of Maryland?
As a transfer student coming from Montgomery College, I always dreamed of attending the University of Maryland ever since I entered high school. I never had the thought of going out-of-state or attending any other university because I have seen so many family members and friends graduate from this institution and land on such great careers and bright futures. I always thought I had to take my chances and hope that I would also have opportunities like my loved ones and friends!

What major/career path do you plan on pursuing and how did you select that path?
The major I am pursuing is information science, as I aspire to have a career as a cybersecurity penetration tester. I chose this path because I see myself working in the cybersecurity world, and I am very interested in it as well. Knowing that in today's world everyone uses technology, the vulnerability of each individual’s devices is at high risk. Working behind the scenes and making sure that threats could be taken down makes me feel like I can also help.

What clubs, community service, campus activities, or hobbies are you currently involved in or plan to take part in?
I currently do community service at the Debre Tsion Kidist Mariam We Kidus Gabriel Church. I help by teaching children and teenagers from ages 5-18 and by planning and participating in fundraisers, religious holidays, and other events. I plan to join any technology clubs, specifically any cybersecurity clubs, that are offered at Maryland.

How has receiving this scholarship positively impacted your life?
I was shocked at first that I even had the opportunity to receive this scholarship. It has given me more courage in my studies and encouraged me to strive for more! I can also see myself getting "squishy" as the program organizers have taught us. “Squishy” is a term used in the program to mean get out of your comfort zone. Overall, by receiving this scholarship, my stress has been relieved and I can concentrate more on my school work.

What are your future goals after graduation?
I plan to continue my studies and also attain certifications for the field I want to work in. I also hope to take part in internships that could lead to my career. I just want to have the opportunity to gain experience before entering the work world because education and experience are key to landing a career.
