Winter Leadership Conclave

The Scholars within the Maryland Promise Program participate in several opportunities to enhance both their academic and leadership acumen, while encouraging them to also give back to their community.
What is Conclave Preparing our MPP Scholars for?
The goal of the Conclave 2-year experience is to teach students about the elements of leadership, provide them with tools to maximize their skills, and empower them to become socially-responsible leaders. Conclave will prepare scholars to complete the following:
- Interact with high-level donors (most notably Clark Foundation, the largest donor in the history of the University of Maryland)
- Deliver presentations about their personal and programmatic experiences (e.g. share personal stories to large influential audiences)
- Interact regularly with high-level university officials
- Plan and participate in programming events
- Serve as peer mentors for other MPP Scholars
- Plan and participate in community service events within the greater College Park, MD area
- Learn to share about their personal experiences with people in the community in accessible way

Plenary Session
Speaker: Grady J. Wright, MPA, CNP, Gallup Certified Strengths Coach
This opening session will establish the learning context. Scholars will begin to explore and discuss their unique power and potential. Four worksheets will help facilitate that process.
+ Session 3 Leadership Luncheon: “Five Clues to Talent”
Scholars will be completing the “Five Clues to Talent” worksheet to follow up on the items discussed during the Plenary session with Grady Wright. Followed by an in-depth discussion on their findings.
Session 4: "Leader Philosophy"

Facilitator: Myles Alexander, M.Ed., Maryland LEAD Coordinator, University of Maryland
Students will reflect on the three leadership sessions from the Fall semester of 2020 including: Consciousness of Self, Congruency, and Commitment. Within this time, students will use their values, identities, personal strengths, and beliefs to create a personal leader philosophy. After completion, students will have the opportunity to view other's philosophies gallery style and present their leader philosophy to the group.


Session 5: "Unlock Your Power through Strengths!"

This session will help each scholar understand and appreciate their dominant talent themes in a meaningful way. Scholars will learn how to discover, develop, and use their talents for greater productivity and more substantial outcomes. The goal is to provide meaningful and sustainable practices that support leadership development. This in-depth session will allow scholars to identify ways to specifically apply each talent theme in their day-to-day lives while learning to appreciate the meaningful impact of theme application.
Session 6: “Controversy with Courage”
3 p.m. (60 min.)
Facilitator: Myles Alexander, M.Ed., Maryland LEAD Coordinator, University of Maryland
In this session students will explore their own attitudes and beliefs about conflict. Students will complete a conflict management styles inventory and will be able to identify their own conflict management style. Students will discuss and reflect on engaging with conflict.
