What made you decide to enroll at the University of Maryland?
What made me decide to enroll in the University of Maryland was because I wanted to represent the state in which I grew up. It is also a very prestigious school. In addition, I wanted to stay near my parents' place.
What major/career path do you plan on pursuing and how did you select that path?
I plan on majoring in computer science, and I chose this career path because of my sister's husband. He works as a computer scientist and whenever he teaches me or shows me his work, it intrigues me to learn more. Not only that, but the problem solving that comes with programing is satisfying and very fun. I believe in being able to enjoy what you do to help with your mental health because you aren't forced to work because you enjoy it.
Activities I do outside of class or community service/volunteer activities I'm involved with:
I used to TA at a school that teaches Vietnamese. I did this for about 4 years as volunteer work because I want to spread my culture and language to the people who want to learn it. I also played a lot of tennis during high school and in the summer.
Which programs are you enrolled in, and what have you gained from your experience in them thus far?
I hope to gain from the Maryland Promise Program in the future people who I can connect with, the support I may need along the way in college, and to learn from people who are wise.
Aside from academics, what else do you hope to take away from your time at Maryland?
I hope I will be able to make lifetime friendships with people along the journey. I would also like to take away with me as I graduate in the future the pride that Maryland has given me.
What are your future goals after graduation?
I want to be able to pay off my parents' mortgage and help my sister with her family. But I can't do this without a job so a job comes first.
