About

What made you decide to enroll at the University of Maryland?
I decided to enroll at the University of Maryland because it felt like the perfect opportunity to grow as a person. During high school, I was unsure of who I wanted to be and was struggling with connecting my interests with a career path. During my sophomore year, I took a tour of UMD's campus and fell in love with all of the technology. I was enamored by all of the buildings that were dedicated to engineering practices. Even though I wasn't particularly interested in STEM at that time, I realized that I could delve into any of these subjects.

What major/career path do you plan on pursuing and how did you select that path?
I am very interested in pursuing information sciences. Information science uses skills in areas such as database design, information architecture, web/mobile development, data analytics, and cybersecurity. I have found that I am interested in coding and cybersecurity, and this particular program has a high job turnout rate. I am very excited to learn more and grow my skills!

Activities I do outside of class or community service/volunteer activities I'm involved with:
When I'm not in class, I am very active in my on-campus ministry. There are weekly bible studies and Sunday services, and I make an effort to join in on their outreach missions. While I am very happy with this community, I want to join more leadership roles, research groups, and sports. I feel that I should expand my horizons and I am looking forward to doing so this year. That being said, I will make it my top priority to attend the club fair this year.

Aside from academics, what else do you hope to take away from your time at Maryland?
There's nothing I want more than to leave UMD with long-lasting connections and valuable friendships. I believe it is very important to maintain a good social life to ensure an exemplary work-life balance.

What are your future goals after graduation?
After I graduate, I want to apply for apprenticeships in the tech field so that I may grow my resume, and I would love to eventually get a well-paying job. I would also like to participate in humanitarian efforts and give back to the community in any way possible. I can see myself joining the Peace Corps in order to gain cultural competence and provide for the underserved.

My favorite part of being a Maryland Promise Scholar:
As a returning scholar, I am extremely appreciative of the counselors I have made connections with. Everyone I have encountered seems to love their job and love the cause that they are working for. It is extremely refreshing to work with the staff because I feel especially cared for in the Maryland Promise Program. I am confident that I have support in my times of confusion and need.
